National Adventures in Smart Lighting

The Australian Smart Lighting Summit will return to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre for its 7th edition on the 28th – 29th August.

Once again Supported by the City of Melbourne, Day 1 of the event will begin with an opening address by the council's very own Ian Dryden, Principal of Industrial Design. Dryden will discuss the city’s aim to design and deploy lighting that enhances people’s experience of the city after dark while promoting safety for all residents and a responsible energy use.

Tom Walker, Manager Commercial Corporate Strategy at SA Power Networks, will present on a Smart Lighting/Smart Network Pilot that has been investigating the degree to which council smart street lighting deployments can provide useful data, e.g. on voltage levels, that can assist with managing the electricity distribution network.

Adam Beck, Executive Director of Smart Cities Council Australia New Zealand will provide a 20-minute address on the importance of Smart Lighting as the foundation for a budding Smart City, touching on the biggest obstacle Australia has faced with its implementation; governance – ownership, operation and leadership.

Steele Adams, Program Coordinator – City Innovation and Sustainability for the City of Newcastle, will explore the city’s drive to meet the needs of a future city, touching on City as an experimental platform, City as a data common and City as a personal service.

Day two of the event will begin with a keynote address by Bryan Douglas, immediate-past Chief Executive Officer of Lighting Council Australia and current Secretary General of the Global Lighting Association.

Peter Tsokas, Chief Executive Officer of the City of Unley, will explore a regional approach to LED lighting and the lessons learned thus far. Tsokas will showcase the use of Smart Lighting in two projects: Cycling Routes and Open Spaces.

Michael Rosetta, Project Manager at Electrix, will deliver an Eastern point of view by highlighting the street lighting deployment underway in ACT.

Dr Gillian Isoardi and Professor Joanne Wood will be providing a joint presentation on the effects of overly bright LED street lighting on drivers at night and residents within their homes. Isoardi and Wood will fully explore the following three areas: direction of lighting towards drivers, direction of lighting towards homes and too much lighting of the wrong colour.

The 7th Annual Australian Smart Lighting Summit will host Dryden, Walker, Beck, Adams, Douglas Tsokas, Rosetta, Isoardi, Wood and other expert speakers on the 28th – 29th August at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
