With populations across the globe steadily increasing, upgrading our city infrastructure – such as street lighting – becomes highly pertinent. Smarter street lighting solutions can lead to increased safety, lower crime rates, economic savings, decreased light pollution and an increase of the night-time economy.
These are just some of the reasons why senior industry professionals convened at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, on the 13th and 14th of September, for the 5th Annual Smart Lighting Summit 2017. The Summit featured over 30 expert presenters from within the lighting sector and welcomed over 150 delegates from public, private and governmental entities.
The Summit featured both national and international presenters. A highly-anticipated international speaker was Joe Hancock, from Florida Light & Power Company. Although, Hancock was confined to his home while Hurricane Irma devastated the south-east US state, he still successfully talked at the Summit via a filmed presentation, which was well received by attendees. Florida Light & Power Company is currently carrying out one of the largest street light LED replacement programs in the world, with already 75,000 lights changed.
Louise Rathleff and Stine Ellermann from the City of Copenhagen also presented at the Summit. The experts discussed how the capital city’s council aims to achieve their ambition of being the very first carbon neutral city in the world.
Executive Director of USA’s Smart Outdoor Lighting Alliance, Bob Parks, returned to the Summit for a second time after his favourable reception at the 2016 event. Parks explained to delegates that we need proper regulations within the lighting sector going forward if we are to be minimise light pollution and future proof facilities.
Australia’s own Ironbark Sustainability had two presentations featured at the conference. Managing Director, Paul Brown, discussed the topic of future-proofing lighting technology. Brown reinforced the need to create technology that will be able to change with improved lighting upgrades, harsher legislation and other external factors. Alexi Lynch, Ironbark’s Business Manager and experienced local government expert, outlined how councils can keep up-to-date with the improvement of lighting technology, data storage and what to ignore.
SA Power Networks’, Thomas Walker, featured South Australia’s smart lighting upgrades within his presentation to delegates. The company is contracted to replace and install 30,000 LED streetlights across the state. The change will bring financial savings, decreased greenhouse gas emissions and safer communities.
Other topics featured in the agenda were: Overview of City of Ryde's LED Retrofit projects with Smart Controls, Light on Demand – How Street Lighting will be revolutionised by Smart Pavings , Cybersecurity and Connected Lighting Infrastructure, Northern Lights – Regional Street Lighting Replacement Program, Smart Public Lighting and the Data Driven City, Energy Efficient LED Public Lighting: What’s happening in Western Australia?, Street Lighting, Crime and the Fear of Crime – Are you in the Dark? and many more thought-provoking presentations.
Additionally there were also the 2nd Annual Delegate Choice Awards for Most Innovative Product and Best Design. For the first time, one company won both awards - LCT GesmbH light & concrete technology, from Austria, for their product, LightStone.
The 5th Annual Smart Lighting Summit was a large success, with sponsors, delegates and speakers mentioning the high calibre of speakers, topics and displays at the event.
